Parrot as a pet - tips for keeping and grooming

The parrot has the highest life expectancy of all pets. If the lively feather friends are properly cherished, they can even live to be around 100 years old, depending on the species. People often make the mistake of choosing a parrot because they consider it particularly tame or even decorative. Another tempting reason to buy is the often given language skills of the funny two-legged friends. The attitude of feathered creatures often turns out to be more complicated than it appears at first glance. Parrots are undoubtedly very sensitive birds.

Every parrot needs a suitable owner

With parrots as pets, you can expect many decades of full responsibility. You should be aware in advance of the fact that you have to accommodate at least two of the lively contemporaries. Parrots are not always just cuddly birds, but sometimes very idiosyncratic and above all stubborn companions. In addition, you need enough space. An appropriately sized aviary is essential. Pieces of fruit and vegetables not only have to be cut laboriously, but food residues must also be removed inside and outside the aviary.

Different types of parrots

The parrot belongs to the order of the Psittaciformes. Traditionally, feathered animals can be divided into two categories: the cockatoos and the actual parrots. The former has a spring hood that can be set up, while they lack the so-called Dyck structure of the spring branches, which breaks the incoming sunlight. The actual parrots do not have a feathered hood. Nonetheless, among these, there are some types that have special neck feathers that act as a kind of frill. What both families have in common is that they have an upright posture and a strong beak, as well as a climbing foot with two toes in front and two in back. Choosing the right parrot is not easy. Amazons, for example, are very popular because they are known for their robust character. Your language skills, on the other hand, are less pronounced. Nevertheless, they have a very loud speech organ, by means of which they like to make themselves felt in the morning and in the evening. Among the parrots that require a lot of sensitivity from the keepers are the blue-fronted Amazonas because when they reach maturity they temporarily turn away from their caregiver and defend their territory with all their might.

Proper nutrition

Many of the feed mixes on offer have a much too high-fat content - sunflower seeds, for example, up to 80 percent. Such feed leads to damage to the health of the bird.

Good feed mixes contain only about 15 percent sunflower seeds and small pumpkin seeds. The rest of this mixture is small seeds that the bird needs.

A disadvantage of the feed mixes: the bird can pick out what it likes. Since the bird owners often fill up the whole bowl, the less tasty rest simply stays there and is no longer touched.

That is why a pressed feed was developed: it contains everything that can be found in the grain feed. But the bird can no longer just pick out the delicacies from this.

Exchange of experience with other owners

Share your experiences with other parrot lovers. Almost every major city has regular "parrot get-togethers" to which the birds and their owners are invited.

Group housing or individual housing?

Parrots are very sociable animals. That is why they often live together in large associations in the great outdoors. You should take this into account when keeping the animals. It is recommended that a parrot in human husbandry has one or two conspecifics at its side. When the birds are alone they tend to be lonely. They often get sick or show behavioral disorders.

The care

Since parrots like to take a little bath every now and then, you should make sure that there is always a small pool with fresh water. After a short period of familiarization, you can regularly let your birds fly freely in the room, but make sure that all doors and windows are closed. It often happens that the claws of the birds grow back faster than they wear out, then you should go to the vet or trim them yourself. A common reason for the fast-growing claws is overfeeding with various nutrients.
